There are no legal enforcement mechanisms for AFIs at the global level. Although there have been relatively few complaints about an IFA, IndustriALL suspended its global declaration on social rights and labor relations of the Volkswagen Auto Group in January 2019 because it refused to allow workers at one of its U.S. plants to join a union.  This example shows that complaints that are filed often violate the provisions of the IFA relating to freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining. The common commitment applies to all Unilever supply chain organizations that have implemented or are in the process of implementing the common commitment, including redress mechanisms.

For example, in plantations that employ large numbers of temporary workers) and where a high number of women are supervised by a majority of men, “specific awareness and training actions should be agreed and implemented by management and the union.” A joint Unilever-IUF-IndustriALL diversity working group was established to follow the process and share experiences and best practices. This collective commitment builds on the work done within Unilever`s goal of a balanced organisation, particularly in the field of management, to raise awareness of gender inequalities. The German automaker systematically refusing to grant the same rights to its employees in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, as in the rest of the world, IndustriALL Global Union today suspends its long-standing global agreement with Volkswagen. IndustriALL Global Union has renewed and strengthened its Global Framework Agreement (GFA) with Siemens Gamesa, the world leader in wind turbine production. Joint commitments between NSMs and global trade union confederations on sexual harassment Since the IFA serves to promote key features of national models of social partnership and cooperative labour relations, they are more relevant to enterprises established in social market economies where the representation of collective interests is the basis of labour regulation and the labour market. It is therefore not surprising that the spread of ifA to transnational companies outside continental Europe has remained quite limited so far, despite recent recent initiatives such as the 2018 agreement by Uni Global Union and Brazilian banking company Banco Itaé.
